Balmy is not a street but an alley by 24th street in the Mission District. It transformed into murals’ alley by a group of local artists and artivists in the 80s. They wanted to show support to Nicaraguans and Salvadorans leaving their country after civil wars. San Francisco received them. The city declared Sanctuary for Immigrants. Nowadays, the mural below remains; it is one of the originals.
Miranda Bergan and O’Brien Thiele worked on it then. And now, along with friends and fellow artists and artivists, they are trying to finish renovating the mural; their campaign is on IndieGoGo.
I saw them the other afternoon and felt so inspired by their love for other people, their pride for what they do, and their commitment to using their wealth to contribute to communities.
